Southern Idaho's Snake River Valley holds one of the most concentrated collections of natural attractions anywhere in the American West, yet it remains largely under the radar for most travelers. Within a thirty-mile stretch of Highway 30, you will find geothermal hot springs, a national monument preserving three-and-a-half-million-year-old fossils, spring-fed waterfalls pouring from basalt cliffs, and a river system that supports world-class kayaking and paddleboarding. The town of Hagerman sits at the center of all of it, and Hagerman RV Village puts you within easy reach of every attraction in the region. If you are planning an RV trip through Idaho — whether as a dedicated stay or a stop on a longer journey — this is the base camp you have been looking for.
The Thousand Springs Scenic Byway
The Thousand Springs Scenic Byway follows U.S. Highway 30 along the north rim of the Snake River Canyon through the heart of the Hagerman Valley. The name comes from the hundreds of springs that emerge from the canyon walls along this stretch — the outflow of the massive Eastern Snake Plain Aquifer, which travels underground from the mountains of central Idaho before surfacing here in spectacular fashion.
The byway connects a string of state parks, natural areas, and small communities that collectively make up one of Idaho's most rewarding driving routes. Thousand Springs State Park alone encompasses multiple units, including Ritter Island with its spring-fed waterfalls, Malad Gorge with its dramatic basalt canyon, and Niagara Springs where water pours from the canyon wall at thousands of gallons per minute.
For RV travelers, the byway is an ideal corridor — the road is well-maintained, the distances between stops are short, and the scenery along the drive itself is worth the trip. You can see the major highlights in a few concentrated days or spend a week exploring every overlook and side road.
The Thousand Springs area is where Idaho stops being a place you drive through and becomes a place you stay.
Why Hagerman
Hagerman occupies an almost ideal position within the Thousand Springs corridor. It is centrally located between the major natural attractions that draw visitors to the region, and it offers something increasingly rare along scenic byways: a full-service RV park with modern amenities and direct access to everything the valley has to offer.
From Hagerman, key attractions are distributed at manageable distances in every direction:
- Miracle Hot Springs — 15 minutes south on Highway 30. Natural geothermal soaking pools. Read our complete hot springs guide.
- Banbury Hot Springs — 20 minutes south. Family-friendly soaking and day-use pools.
- Blue Heart Springs — Accessible by kayak from local launch points. Iconic blue spring pool on the Snake River. See our kayaking guide.
- Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument — 15 minutes south. Home of the Hagerman Horse and world-class Pliocene fossils. See our fossil beds guide.
- Ritter Island — 10 minutes south. Spring-fed waterfalls and walking trails within Thousand Springs State Park.
- Malad Gorge — 20 minutes east. Dramatic basalt gorge with footbridge and canyon overlooks.
- Shoshone Falls — 45 minutes east near Twin Falls. Known as the "Niagara of the West," at 212 feet tall.
The town itself is small, quiet, and welcoming. There are a few local restaurants, a gas station, and the kind of unhurried atmosphere that makes you want to sit outside with a cup of coffee and watch the morning light move across the valley. A 5-Day Sample Itinerary
Five days is enough to see the highlights of the Thousand Springs area without rushing. Here is a suggested itinerary that covers the major attractions while leaving room for unstructured time and personal discoveries.
Day 1: Arrive and Settle In
Arrive at Hagerman RV Village and get set up at your site. Walk the park grounds, let the dog stretch at the dog park, and get oriented. If you arrive early enough, take a short drive through town to get your bearings. Pick up any supplies you need. End the day with a quiet evening at your campsite.
Day 2: Hot Springs Day
Head south on Highway 30 to Miracle Hot Springs for a morning soak in the private or public pools. After lunch, continue to Banbury Hot Springs for a different atmosphere. Return to camp relaxed and unhurried. Take a stroll around the park or fire up the grill at your picnic table.
Day 3: Kayaking and the River
Reserve a kayak or paddleboard from one of the three local rental outfitters and spend the day on the Snake River. Paddle to Blue Heart Springs, explore the river corridor, and soak in the canyon scenery. Return to camp for showers and a well-earned dinner.
Day 4: Fossil Beds and Exploration
Visit the Hagerman Fossil Beds Visitor Center in town, then drive south to the Oregon Trail Overlook and walk the monument bluffs. In the afternoon, head to Ritter Island within Thousand Springs State Park for spring-fed waterfalls and walking trails. If time allows, swing by Malad Gorge for the dramatic canyon views.
Day 5: Shoshone Falls and Departure
Drive east to Shoshone Falls near Twin Falls — at 212 feet, it is taller than Niagara Falls and most spectacular during spring runoff. Explore the Twin Falls area, then return to Hagerman to break camp or settle in for another evening if your schedule allows.
